Kitchen of apartment occupied by Negroes, South Side of Chicago, Illinois, April 1941.
According to the image here, there is a woman who appears to wash her clothes with a pot where she cleans her clothes. There are clean clothes that are hanging to be dried however, inside of the house, the condition is very poor because back then, black people had no money to afford a washing machine or buy a better home due to segregation which is even worse because they would end up being homeless without any food or clothes. If their home is in poor condition, then there is a chance that their homes would be flooded. This has affected millions of African Americans who had lost their homes due to the flood and many of these African Americans became homeless because their homes were destroyed. This women in the image worked very hard to clean her clothes however, if the flooding ever happened, then her clean clothes would be ruined as well as her home due to poor conditions. Not only people lost their homes but they lost their resources that they needed to survive such as food. With the homes being destroyed, these people have to find a way to find shelter or go to refugee camps.
